Equipment needs to be replaced or repaired especially if they are no longer functioning properly. And the difficulty of repairing equipment depends on how complex its mechanisms are and a good example is a garage door. Like any item or tool, garage doors also deteriorate as time passes by and it needs to be maintained at least once in a while. Changing a garage door’s torsion spring can be very challenging and may even be dangerous for those who are not familiar in doing so.
The torsion spring is basically what lifts the garage door so it is advisable for first-timers to have a professional assist them in repairing it. An important thing to keep in mind before repairing or replacing the spring is that it might break if you attempt to wind or unwind it. The cone might also slip or explode if you also attempt to do former. Using a secured ladder while grasping the bars tightly on their ends far away from the cone can keep you from harm’s way. You also have to make sure that you have the necessary tools to help you fix your garage door available. You need ten inch vice grips, an adjustable wrench, and two one and a half inch by eighteen inch winding socket bars, socket wrench, rules and a file.
Before loosening the spring, you have to make sure that you there are winding bars on each holes in each cone. After this, you have to unplug the power cord from the garage opener while the garage door is closed. When you are done unplugging it, you can now disjoint the opener from the garage door. You have to make sure that the new spring’s size is similar to the old one and then mark the torsion shaft appropriately based on your measurement. When you are done unwinding the old torsion springs, what you have to do next is to loosen and remove the two bolts and secure the center stationary torsion cones to the spring bracket. You may then replace the springs and reinstall the torsion hardware. Wind the new springs and make sure that you lubricate the garage door so to have it run smoothly then you reconnect the opener and plug the power cord.
Again, if it is your first time doing this, it is recommended that you ask for professional’s assistance rather than risk yourself getting hurt.
